In the last few years there has been a boom in the number of tourists who come to
visit the mining settlements from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
Sulcis Iglesiente is one of the richest areas in Europe for mining archaeology which
dates back to Roman times.
From the nineteenth century until recently mining was the major economic activity in
this area and that has resulted in numerous archaeological sites that have been
renovated and form the Geominerario Park of Sardinia. These sites are now open to
the public. There are museums, mines and complete mining villages that give
visitors a real insight into life in those days.
